Flood hazard models associated with flood mapping studies provide valuable data needed for determining risk and managing development in the Special Flood Hazard Area and the floodway portion of the SFHA. The models combined with the community regulatory standards are a tool to limit encroachments into the SFHA and minimize increases in risk to existing development.
Communities are routinely provided floodways that include a surcharge without information on the impact of the surcharge. The project assesses the community’s understanding of the impact of a floodway surcharge.
